In Mozart's famous aria ‘Non più andrai farfallone amoroso’ from the opera ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ K492, Count d'Almaviva mocks page Cherubino after enlisting him in his regiment in Seville. ‘Non più andrai farfallone amoroso, notte e giorno in d'intorno girando delle belle turbando il riposo ... non più quell'aria brillante .... ed invece del Fandango una marcia per il fango’. Of this aria for bass, Žilvinas Smalys, composer and bassoonist born in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 1980, made variations of it for solo bassoon included in his ‘Seven Variations on Famous Opera Themes’ published by Accolade. Sure that this composition does not sound to your ears like ‘ ... the concert of trombones, of bombards, of cannons, that the balls in all the thunders make whistling in your ear’, I wish you a good listening!
