Ah! I will tell you,
Mother,
what causes my torment?
Dad wants me to reason,
like a big person,
but I say that candy
are better than
reason.
This is the first verse of the French folk song ‘Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman’ from the mid 18th century, which Mozart used to compose twelve variations on it. The work, which is classified in the Köechel catalogue as K.265, is original for piano. The adaptation I propose for solo bassoon is by the American bassoonist Alan Hawkins (1938-2012) published by Bocal Music, a publishing house he founded in 1988.
