Robert Capanna REMEMBRANCE for solo bassoon Michele Colombo Bassoon

By the American composer Robert Capanna (1952- 2018), I propose ‘Remembrance’ for solo Bassoon from 1977 dedicated to Sol Schoenbach. I quote what he wrote in a concert programme dedicated to him (6 January 2017)

 

“It seems to me that one of the essential questions every creative person has to ask himself is “who am I doing this for?” Obviously, a lot of us might presume that the answer is “myself”, and clearly, we are our own most basic audience. It’s hard to imagine a circumstance where you would make art that you didn’t like (although I suppose some artists on an aggressive career path might make art for reasons in addition to being satisfied with it.) Nonetheless, “myself” seems like a pretty small group, so I believe that the wider audience of performers and listeners plays a key role in shaping who we are and who we become as composers and artists. I’m not trying to share the blame—I’m just saying that my music wouldn’t be what it is without the feedback and input from this wider circle of colleagues and friends, even those with conflicting or contrary ideas about what makes good or bad music.”

Mr. Capanna was a composer in genres from chamber to orchestral to choral, and his works were played by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Mendelssohn Quartet, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Orchestra 2001, Philadelphia Singers, and others

 

Șerban Nichifor SEPHARDIC INVOCATION for Bassoon

Di Șerban Nichifor (1954) compositore, violoncellista e insegnante di musica rumeno, vi propongo la sua composizione “Sephardic Invocation” per fagotto solo. Nell’agogica del brano viene spesso indicato di suonare come un Shofar, un corno di montone utilizzato come strumento musicale durante alcune funzioni religiose ebraiche. Ho pensato così di aggiungere, durante le lunghe pause segnate dall’ autore, il suono di un Shofar, così da sottolineare l’ atmosfera evocata nella composizione.

Cyrli Plante Etudes pour bassoon solo op.170 n.3

Cyril Plante, compositore nato nel 1975, ha scritto nel 2012 “10 Etudes for bassoon solo” che vanno ad aggiungersi alla lista degli esercizi che costellano la didattica per fagotto. Nell’eseguire “Fuji-Yama”, scritto da A. Ouzounoff, mi sono svincolato dalla metrica musicale  come richiede l’agogica “libero” posta all’inizio della composizione. Per contestualizzare la descrizione musicale mi sono permesso, abusando della liberta concessa dall’autore, di aggiungere un sottofondo di un ambiente naturale. Ho interpretato il brano immaginando ciò che descrivo in queste poche righe.

 “Alle pendici del monte Fuji, sulle rive di un torrente, un monaco siede in contemplazione.
Lascia al suono del flauto il compito di narrare l’inenarrabile.
L’albore rischiara la bruma evanescente e nel silenzio si ode la Vita respirare.
Ai piedi del Monte Sacro, nell’umiltà acquiescente, il monaco raggiunge la Cima.
Il suo sorriso tranquillo illumina la nebbia che lungo i declivi evapora nella Luce”.

Direction of the future. The sun in a smile and the air blowing directly from the United States of America. Cigarette in mouth, whisky and soda and ‘Tu vuò fà l'americano’ playing on the jukebox. A homage to the 1950s, by Mike Curtis (1952), from his ‘Seven More Jazz & Ethnic Duos’. I propose it performed with Joanna Cordoano, a former pupil of mine who was passing through from Sweden. Recorded on a sunny day amidst piadinas and coca-cola.

Rainer Bischof born in Vienna in 1947 is a philosopher, composer and artistic director. In his works Bischof seeks the union of music and philosophy. A composer of the Second Viennese School, he was a pupil of Han Erich Apostel. He is a recipient of the Medal of Merit of the Association of Adult Education Centers (1983), the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art (1993), the Ring of Honor of the Bregenz Festival (1997) and the Austrian Cross of Honor 1st Class Award (1999), among other awards. He is an avid cook and has been a dog driver for the “Austrian Rescue Dog Brigade.”

The solo bassoon piece “Transfiguration” op.42 (1995) is dedicated to his friend and virtuoso bassoonist Milan Turković, who performed it on January 30, 1996 at the Mozartsaal of the Vienna Konzerthauses
